AIR INTERSALONICA

A view from...

City of Kalambaka and built on natural sandstone rock pillars, Meteora stoically overlooks the Plain of Thessaly and the monasteries dominate imposingly the view of any passerby. Untouched by the passing of time, the natural beauty of the scenery and the unique geological phenomenon that occurs render Meteora a unique sight. Constituting the second most important complex of monasteries in Greece after Mount Athos, Meteora- keeping a six-century long monastic tradition-is one of the most important monuments of Orthodoxy, a fact proven by the inclusion of the monasteries complex in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The impressive magnificence of this giant cluster of stones, that look like the defy gravity, leaves every visitor speechless. Out of the 24 original monasteries, today, only six of them remain intact, and two are inhabited by nuns. More than a thousand handwritten codes and Byzantine documents are stored in safe boxes in the monasteries, while each monastery holds its own attractions and unique valuable artifacts. In the Holy Monastery of Saint Stephen is kept the blessed scull of Saint Charalampos, a valuable and sacred heirloom, whereas you can find at the Great Metereon hundreds of manuscripts, documents and printed books from various points of literature history.
